Behave by Robert Sapolsky

In preparation to tomorrow's GBM regarding empathy fatigue we thought it would be beneficial to share with you all a chapter from this book.* This chapter discusses some biological aspects of empathy, comparisons between human and animal behaviors, as well as gauges empathy's usefulness when it comes to prompting people to act in favor of others.

The descriptions Sapolsky writes about the regions of the brain responsible for the affective and cognitive aspects of empathy are especially useful if any of you like to consider things from a biological perspective. You can find this information in the section titled Affect and/or Cognition, on pages 528-535.

A lot of the information used in the powerpoint comes from the discussion in this chapter, so if anyone is interested either before or after the meeting to dive deeper into the topics discussed this would be a good place to start! Reading the rest of the book is also highly recommended if you're interested in this subject in general.

Click the file below to download the chapter!

*We do not require any reading to be done before meetings, don't worry! We just like to offer material in case anyone wants supplemental information or would like to bring up something during discussion! :)
